Joel grew up in the cool hills of Ness Castle, St. Thomas.
His education was obtained at the Woburn Lawn
All-Age School, the Seaforth High Institute and Excelsior
Community College, respectively.
Being reared by his grandparents meant that going to
church was mandatory, and so Joel grew up attending the
Sanctified Church of God in Ness Castle.
At age 16 he made a commitment to follow Christ and
Joel found himself being drawn to the musical life of the
church and this contributed to him learning to play the
guitar at an early age.
He was also very zealous about the work of God.
This was recognized by the church and Joel was
licensed as a minister in his denomination a few years
zeal for God kept growing and this led him to further his
theological understanding by applying to the United
Theological College of the West Indies (UTCWI) and the
University of the West Indies Mona Campus where he gained
a Diploma in Ministerial Studies and a B.A in Theology. He
further obtained a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education and
four years at UTCWI helped to affirm the call to full-time
pastoral ministry that Joel was already sensing.
The Sanctified Church of God did not allow Joel to
exercise the call to the ministry on a full-time basis, as
ministers in that context were expected to work otherwise.
Being at UTCWI as an independent student, gave Joel the
opportunity to intermingle with all the denominations
present on campus.
After conversations with the warden of the United
Church community, Rev. Henley Bernard, Joel began
contemplating becoming a part of the United Church.
After graduating from UTCWI in 2004, Joel began
working in the St. Paul’s and Norwood congregations as a
ministry assistant/Youth Pastor.
completing a year, Joel applied to the United Church in
Jamaica and the Cayman Islands for an opportunity to
exercise the call to full time ministry he felt on his
life of which his application was accepted.
As a dedicated servant of God he was ordained to the
Ministry of Word and Sacrament in November of 2006.
He was called to
lead two Churches in Kingston Jamaica as their senior
Pastor in 2007 which he did for seven years.
He is married to his charming wife Sandra for 18 years.
The union has produced three sons, Joel (jr), Roshaun and
He enjoys playing the guitar, singing and playing cricket
His philosophy is “Never say no to a challenge; If God
takes you to it, he will guide you through it. “
